Theragran Premier CoQ10 and QVC Vitamins.

Posted by Andrew Lessman

As you might imagine, I receive countless questions every week and I do my best to collect and answer them during my shows at HSN. However, some of the answers are not appropriate for TV if they concern certain medical issues and/or are specific to another company’s products.  And of course, those happen to be the two largest areas for questions.

As far as other products, in my last webcast, I discussed the horribly deceptive levels of CoQ10 in Theragran’s multivitamin.  It contains only 250 micrograms, which is one-fourth of a milligram or one-four-hundredth (0.25%) of my CoQ10 100mg! They provide a totally useless dose of CoQ10 and they know it, but apparently they don’t care.  I was the first to offer CoQ10 in the USA over 25 years ago and it is shocking that someone could make such an outrageously deceptive product.  The world’s largest manufacturer of CoQ10 (Kaneka) is also disappointed that someone would offer a useless dose of such an amazing material.  I am sure Theragran chose it to look impressive numerically (250), since no one would ever imagine it was in micrograms, which are one-thousandth of a milligram!  In short, Theragran’s levels of CoQ10 are a joke with which they are simply trying to fool consumers.  Sadly, the more you know, the more you notice these kinds of things, which is why I spend so much time explaining the details of the ingredients, quantities, units, standardization, etc.  I know it can get boring, but when it comes to vitamins, the more you know, the healthier you will be.  In short, it pays to be an informed vitamin consumer.

As far as other questions about other products, the largest number of questions relate to the vitamins sold by my friends at QVC.  Given my respect for QVC’s remarkable organization and my desire to be neighborly, I have avoided all your questions about QVC vitamins.  That is not fair to you and I am sorry.  I answer questions about hundreds of other products, but I avoid QVC’s and in so doing, I realize I have shirked my responsibility to you, since regardless of the source, I have always been willing to provide my honest technical opinion about any product question I am presented.  As a result, I will no longer sidestep questions that pertain to technical attributes of QVC vitamins and although some of my comments might seem critical, my intent is not to criticize, but to only fulfill my obligation to you to provide clear, reliable, factual information about the technical characteristics of any vitamin product regardless of its source.  The Q in QVC has always stood for Quality and for decades was well represented by their quality products and impeccable quality service; however, it is unfortunate that QVC has now chosen to offer nutritional supplements that are both technically and qualitatively beneath their leadership role in TV retailing.  Anyhow, I will limit my future discussion to the facts and the facts will speak for themselves.

Almost twenty years ago when I first appeared on QVC, I told their Founder and CEO that I was not there to sell vitamins and if they expected me go on TV and play that role, then they would have to find someone else to do that job, since I was a teacher and not a salesman.  I told him that the most important role anyone could play when it comes to nutritional supplements in this country was not to sell their vitamins (too many people were already doing that), but to provide the objective, factual information upon which viewers can make better and more informed decisions about their health and their vitamins regardless of whether they purchase the vitamins being sold on TV.  Twenty years later my role and my goals have not changed.  And you have my most sincere apologies for not responding to any of your thousands of questions over the years regarding QVC vitamins and my assurances that I will now respond to all your questions in the future.

After this weekend’s shows at HSN, you will begin to see my personal blog postings where I will answer many of your questions relating to QVC products.  Again, I am very sorry that I have not answered any of these questions in the past.  I promise that I will now do so in the future.

Upcoming Today’s Specials.

Posted by Andrew Lessman

I hope everyone enjoyed their July 4th weekend.  It is always nice to be able to take some extra time relaxing with family and friends celebrating this very special day.  It is very easy to forget the incredible spirit that made our country great and the blessings we all share to live here today, but for me, Independence Day always reminds me of those things and the privilege we all enjoy.

As I’ve done for the past 15 years, I am in Colorado with family and friends where I love to spend my spare time running mountain trails.  There has been a lot of rain in the Colorado Mountains this spring, so the mountains are now remarkably green and lush with beautiful wildflowers alongside the remote mountain trails I love to run.

I am now finishing up with the final preparations for my upcoming visit, which is HSN’s Birthday Month and I thought I would respond to some of the speculation and questions about this weekend’s Today’s Specials.  As far as Sunday’s Today’s Special, it was designed to be extra special specifically for HSN’s July Birthday.  I thought that the perfect place for me to start would be with a unique version of HSN’s and my Number One Reorder product.  I then added our most popular new ingredient to that most popular reorder product making what will undoubtedly be an all-time favorite this Sunday.  You will also be pleased to hear that Sunday’s price would make it by far the best Today’s Special of its kind without considering the addition of this special new ingredient.  The normal daily HSN price on these combined ingredients would be almost three times Sunday’s Today’s Special price, so the savings will be fantastic!  This formula is the source of more testimonials than any other product I make and since I am starting to give things away like Colleen, I will stop with the clues for now.  Anyhow, I hope you will be as excited to see it on Sunday as we were to create such a unique formula.  You can also rest assured that this special product was designed and manufactured exclusively for Sunday’s Today’s Special and will be just about as fresh as the produce you might buy at your grocery store and of course, like everything I make for you, it was produced in our facilities utilizing 100% solar energy.

As far as Friday’s Today’s Specials, you have a choice of two separate products.  Each one represents an absolutely essential structural component for our body’s most vital tissues – particularly as we age.  They are both very straightforward products, but it would be impossible to find products anywhere that deliver their purity, quality and ease of use without stomach upset that these formulas provide.  Plus, Friday’s Today’s Special pricing makes them a value that is well under half the cost of their normal HSN prices…plus, free shipping!

Throughout HSN’s Birthday weekend, every single product I make is available at Special Pricing and with Free Shipping and Handling, so be sure to tune-in or visit HSN.com and of course, regardless of whether you see your favorite product on TV or not, there is still special savings and free shipping on everything I make.  Happy Birthday to HSN!  Enjoy!

See you soon…best of health.

Andrew

The Truth about Vegetarian Capsules. Natural Gelatin versus Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose.

Posted by Andrew Lessman

Hi Everyone.

I am preparing for our July shows, which happen to coincide with HSN’s Birthday, so my apologies for being absent from my Blog the past few weeks, since I have been very busy putting together some HSN Birthday Specials.  Once my July visit is over, this summer will hopefully be a little quieter and I will catch up on numerous blog topics.

In the meantime, I noticed a number of inquiries and posts relating to our gelatin capsules and I just thought I would provide a little information.  First of all, if there was a truly natural, vegetable-based capsule available, then I would have been the first person using it long ago; but sadly, nothing exists.  I have been exploring the use of a vegetable-based capsule for almost 30 years, but there is no true, vegetable-based product that I would put in my body on a daily basis.  The “vegetarian” capsules you see on the market are NOT made from vegetables and the more you know, the more you would be concerned about them and avoid them as well.  They are not vegetable-based at all, but are merely not made from animals.  They actually have a closer relationship to the paper in your daily newspaper or a building under construction than to anything you would ever contemplate eating or putting in your body.  Although approved for and commonly used in foods, I believe the even more common use for Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose is as part of numerous construction materials.

My desire for a vegetarian capsule goes back almost 30 years, since for several years, I was a very strict vegan eating no animal or dairy products at all.  Like many of you, I was forced to remove my vitamins from my capsules to take them and when you are taking almost 100 capsules per day that was quite an effort.  As many of you know, I am no longer a vegan, but I would still estimate that almost two-thirds of my meals are vegetarian (vegan).  As a result, I do not cavalierly or carelessly consume animal products, including my capsules, but the same goes for my consumption of vegetable products, including “vegetarian” capsules.  I choose to consume vegetarian-based foods in a healthy fashion and a “vegetarian” capsule has nothing to do with vegetables and even less to do with health. As I have said before, these capsules are made of a compound that I and other health-oriented individuals would choose never to consume – Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose.  Unfortunately, the image we all have of vegetable capsules being made from wonderfully healthy vegetables is patently false and the more accurate image would be of the wood-pulping factory or of the paper manufacturing industry, since that is the closest image you will have to the source of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose.

I wish there were more options, but sadly, the only healthy option, although not vegetarian, is the highest quality gelatin, which we use.  As far as I am concerned, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose is not healthy at all and although it is not derived from animals that still does not change the fact that it is not a healthy chemical substance.  Again, the healthy vegetarian option, which is what I did when I was a vegan, is to open the capsules.  I have also contemplated making certain products available as powders only, thus eliminating the need to use or open capsules.  The formulas would be identical to those in capsules, since our products alone are 100% pure and no encapsulation additives are used.  If this is interesting to some of you, please let me know, since virtually all of our most popular products have little or no taste when mixed with food, such as smoothies, puréed fruit, yogurt, etc.

I hope this helped to clarify the situation and my apologies to the vegans out there, since I formerly was a vegan and even today, if it were possible, I would love a vegetarian capsule, but a healthy option does not exist.  Gelatin is the safest material that is guaranteed to predictably and reliably deliver your supplement’s benefits. Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose-based “vegetarian” capsules are just a synthetic compound not derived from animals, but not considered healthy by any stretch of the imagination.  Moreover, we control the source, quality and purity of all the gelatin in our capsules and I am not sure the same can be said for the source of the Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose found in the typical “vegetarian” capsule.

Thanks.  Andrew
